NGOs perceived to be pro-Opposition slapped with investigations under foreign funding with implication of being foreign controlled and unpatriotic.
SUBANG JAYA: Non-governmental organization (NGO) Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM), a human rights watchdog is being investigated by the Companies Commission of Malaysia (CCM) said political scientist and activist, Dr. Wong Chin Huat.
Established in 1989, the NGO’s application under the Societies Act 1966 was rejected by the government spurring them to follow in the footsteps of other NGOs by registering as a company under the Registrar of Companies (ROC) instead of a society.
Mustafa K Anuar, Secretary of Aliran and journalism professor at Universiti Sains Malaysia said the ROS being under the Home Ministry “says a lot about a highly politicised ministry,” adding that organizations critical of the government would “not get a favourable treatment in terms of getting itself registered as a society”.
